Revalidation following the Francis report

April 2016 saw the biggest change to the regulation of nurses and midwives in the history of the NMC thereby fulling one of the key recommendations from the Francis Report into the failings of the Mid Staffordshire NHS Trust.

Nurses and Midwives must now undergo revalidation every three years to maintain their right to practice . Any change can appear to be daunting but the NMC have made the process clear and straightforward offering helpful guidance on the web site in the form of templates, forms, case studies, films and materials.

Simply put there are eight steps:
1. To complete 450 hours of practice over three years (some levels require additional hours)
2. 35 hours of CPD to be recorded in accurate records.
3. 5 pieces of practice related feedback.
4. 5 written reflective accounts.
5. Reflective discussion with another NMC Registrant on your CPD, feedback or events and experiences.
6. A declaration of health and character – if you have been convicted or cautioned for a criminal offence you are required to declare it.
7. Proof of professional indemnity.
8. Confirmation by a supervisor which will normally be a line manager.
