The shocking scenes on the recent TV documentary from one of the country’s leading secure unit’s showed the appalling way young people in the custodial estate are sometimes treated. Whilst they are criminal they are above all else still children.

Tougher penalties for mobile phone use

The Government are poised to increase the financial penalty and number of points to be endorsed for motorists driving whilst using a mobile phone. This change is suggested as part of the Government’s Road Safety Plan, but questions could be asked as to whether this will actually form an effective deterrent and provide for safer roads.

Gang injunctions have been relatively unused in the Manchester area despite having been available for the police and local authorities to apply for since January 2011 for adults and January 2012 for juveniles over 14 years old under the Policing and Crime Act 2009.
