Jack’s race across the world: Part 2

Welcome to the second part of our new blog series following Jack Ashworth as he embarks on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure across the globe. After being granted a sabbatical by Burton Copeland, Jack is swapping courtrooms for camper vans, and case files for cultural experiences, as he travels across continents with his own version of a “Race Across the World”. In this series, Jack will be sharing honest, unfiltered updates from the road- the highs, the challenges, and everything in between. From unexpected travel disruptions to spontaneous decisions and life on the move, this is a real insight into what it’s like to step away from routine and explore the unknown…

Having finished our time in the van by driving up the East coast of Spain we ended in Barcelona, roughly two weeks of Barca before having to come back early for knee surgery! Although the life adjustment from the working week to life on the open road has been a breeze I have still mustered up the will power to study for the Solicitors Qualifying Exam on the move.

We had to unexpectedly return early from Spain as I was awaiting surgery for an operation on my knee and a date became available. It took a great deal of planning to configure our travel dates with the surgery rehabilitation timelines as I am not allowed to fly for a period after the surgery and we already had flights booked to Japan. Taking the surgery date was a risk but a necessary one.

I was naturally drawn back to my Team BC teammates. A small bribery of donuts for the office made sure they don’t forget me. Great to hear that the running bug has hit Burtons once more and I hear Damian, Lucy and Dan did well at the Manchester 10K.

My surgery is now done, and I am undergoing rehab so I will be in a fit state to fly and hopefully run again soon. The flights are booked to Japan in roughly two weeks.

The next leg of our trip will take 6 months. Starting in Japan and then visiting: South Korea, China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Singapore.

Hoping that the above destinations will bring much to share with you all in my future blogs. Tabi wa michizure, yo wa nasake!
